In 1977, ten employees of the Berven Carpet Corp. met at the home of Bob Baines, in Fresno, Calif., to discuss the concept of creating a new carpet mill.  The ten agreed to form Pacific Crest Mills, later to be re-named "Pacificrest" Mills.  Bob's plan was that there would be partners who operated the mill and partners who would be out in their territories, selling carpet.  Being a new company, no funds were available to pay any of the selling partners, so it was decided that they would be "sales agents" rather than company employees, earning income as commission when something was sold.  Bob even had names picked out for each of the sales agent's future companies: Tom's company, being in Orange County, Calif., could be called "Saddleback Sales Agency"; Larry, in the Bay Area, could own "El Camino Sales"; George, in Seattle, could be "Puget Sales" and Don could go back to Arizona to set up "Camelback Sales Agency".

Don liked the name and -- whoa -- no one was using it.  Camelback Sales Agency was formed and twelve months of starvation for the Payne family followed.  That's the trouble with being a "sales agent" instead of a company employee: no pay check until something is sold.  And it took at least ten months for the new products to catch on.  Eventually Pacific Crest was a hit with the retailers, offering a modest residential line, a custom carpet line and a promising collection of commercial carpets.  Can you believe it, we even had a line of commercial carpet tiles -- way back then.

It wasn't long before that Camelback Sales Agency added fabulous manufacturers like Lonseal, Carousel, Pirelli, Concept International, Brinton, Feltex, Ulster, Richmond, Charleston, RC Musson, Celia, Bremworth, Catalina, The Rug Makers, Amtico, Junckers and Wool Ease.  By 1992, it was obvious that the agency needed a showroom to show all of the wonderful lines.  That was the beginning of "Floor Styles", the agency showroom, which began in a small office space at 14th Street & Indian School Rd., Phoenix.

More great flooring lines found their way to Camelback Sales in the years that followed: Tribute, Burtco, Dawn, Mipolam, Heuga Tile, Lowes, Almar, Taralflex, Dodge-Regupol, Gerbert, Centiva, Corniche, Princeton Technologies (later known as Prince Street), Gerflor, Permagrain, Sponge Cushion and the renamed Pacificrest.  In 1999, Floor Styles evolved into Interior Surfaces Guild (ISG), moving into the Arizona Design Center, 68th St. & Thomas Rd., Scottsdale.  In 2006, ISG closed and Floor Styles took over the ISG lease at the newly re-named 68th Street Design Center, later to become part of the Scottsdale Design District.

From its inception, Camelback Sales has represented the finest residential and commercial flooring lines throughout Arizona, Southern Nevada and New Mexico.  In recent year, we've proudly added the lines Dinoflex, Stanton/Royal Dutch, Antrim, Rosecore, MAT, EcoDomo and Bolefloor.

Over the past 38 years, we have supplied quality flooring and support for more than 18,000 projects throughout the West.  Camelback Sales Agency and its showroom, Floor Styles, continue to supply wholesale flooring to dealers and interior designers, with respect paid to the client's needs and consideration of the dealer's or designer's flooring concept.
